Gleaning Campout
November 3rd, 2006 spryken
Our Troop is preparing for a Gleaning Campout next week. Gleaning is a service opportunity. After a farmer harvests his crops, there remains some crops in the field. The harvesters cannot get every last bit of the crop in a cost effective way. This left over crop usually just rots. Gleaners get permission to go behind the harvesters to pick up the leftovers. Our troop will glean a field, donating the crop to a food shelter.
After our day gleaning, the troop will campout in a primitive campsite. No facilities, no water. One of the star attactions will be an “Iron Chef” style Dutch Oven cook off. No idea what the “theme” ingredient will be. I will report on the winning recipes.
Sunday, the troop will participate in a local Orienteering Club’s event. Should be a great way to hone our map skills. A lot of the boys are new, and will use the event to pass there First Class requirements.
