The Ten Essentials For Backpacking
October 24th, 2006 spryken
When we went to Philmont Scout Ranch, they provided each Leader and Scout with a list of the “10 Essentials” for Hiking.
- Map and Compass
- Sun and Insect Protection
- Water Bottles filled with disinfected water
- Rain Gear and extra layered clothing
- First Aid Kit
- Matches
- Tell someone your itinerary
- Extra food
- Pocket Knife
- Watch
1. A map and compass are essential. You can tell where you are, how far you have to go and find alternate trails or campsites. Now I always include a GPS too. No, I don’t belive a GPS replaces a good Topo Map and Compass. Yes, I can get by without the GPS. But a GPS is a tool, and a very good tool. More on that in another post……
2. Sun and Insect protection. This is not just for comfort. The sun can really cause some damage and injury. You owe it to yourself to protect against sunburn. Not only will you be miserable if you get burnt, but it increases the chance of dehydration. Insect bites can become infected and now we need to worry about insect bourne diseases.
3. Water bottles - I currently use the Platypus Hydration system. The pouches are collapsible and easily stored when empty. I can carry extra empty pouches without adding much weight, in case one breaks, the weather is hot or the water sources are fewer than expected. Always carry a way to purify water, and use it!!
4. Rain Gear and extra clothing - What can I say? Weather happens. Follow the Boy Scout Motto, “Be Prepared”.
5. First Aid Kit - This is the one item I always carry and hope I never I to use. Unfortunately, I almost always have to use it. No matter how well I try to protect against blisters, I always seem to get one.
6. Matches - Preferrably waterproof, or stored in a water tight container.
7. Tell someone your intinerary - Common Sense. Always let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return. Again, Unfortunately, accidents happen.
8. Extra Food - You may be delayed, either because of weather, accidents or a change of plans.
9. Pocket Knife - Without other utensils, you could survive and make do with just a pocket knife. Of course you can use it to cut clothing into bandages, etc.
10. Watch - Never could figure this one out. I actually would place a Flashlight on the list instead. I like to use the hands free LED headlights.
Sure, there are a lot of other items I always carry. I would probably consider them “Essential”. But in reality, I could forget to bring most of them and be able to adapt and still have a great trip. But if I forget one of the 10 Essentials, I am courting diaster.
First and foremost, always use Common Sense. Which is probably extremely uncommon!! The Boy Scout Motto will help in your preparation. Always remember it. Be Prepared!!

My Dad likes to tell me stories about “City Folk” that wander into the Maine forests armed only with a GPS. Then drop it into a stream, lake, pond, on rocks, or the batteries die.
About 3 - 4 of these types end up being found, a year later, as dead as their GPS.
No substitute for a good map and compass, I agree.
